South Indian Tomato Soup
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 tsp. black mustard seeds
1 tsp. asafetida powder
1 or 2 sprigs of curry leaves
1 or 2 tomatoes, chopped
1 green hot chili pepper, chopped
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
1 to 1&1/2 tsp. rasam powder
1 tsp. tomato paste(*1)
salt to taste
2 to 3 cups of water
1/2 cooked toor daal (pulp)
2 tsp. lemon juice
Heat oil in a heavy saucepan with high heat and add the mustard seeds, asafetida powder and 1 sprig of curry leaves (the rest will be used later.)
When the mustard seeds pop, add tomatoes, green chili peppers, turmeric, rasam powder, tomato paste, salt, and a cup of water.
When it starts boiling, add another cup of water and allow to simmer for 5 minutes.
Add cooked toor dal (pulp) and water if you need and bring to boil. ( If it's too spicy add more cooked toor daal (pulp) to tone down the spiciness
Add lemon juice and the rest of curry leaves.
